7 mistakes that delay you at immigration
Every one of these errors is seen daily at Thai counters. Every one of them takes seconds to avoid - if you know to check for it.
Seven errors, seven fixes
1. One wrong passport character
The mistake: typing the passport number from memory or an old scan, and missing one digit. The fix: copy character by character from the passport itself, then read the entry back against the page.
2. Flight number that does not match the booking
The mistake: using the flight from the original plan after the itinerary changed. The fix: open the current booking confirmation and use that flight number and arrival date - the card must match reality.
3. Filing outside the 72-hour window
The mistake: trying to file a week early, or forgetting until the departure gate. The fix: set a reminder for 72 hours before arrival; if the connection is long, the window may open mid-flight - file before you board the last leg. Fallback: the portal accepts submissions until you reach immigration, and kiosks with Wi-Fi stand in five international airports (Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai).
4. One card shared by the whole family
The mistake: filing for two adults and assuming the children are covered. The fix: one card per traveller, children and infants included - a parent files on a child's behalf.
5. A vague first-night address
The mistake: "a hotel in Bangkok" instead of the actual address. The fix: copy the address from your booking confirmation; immigration may cross-check the two.
6. Assuming a visa covers the card
The mistake: holding a tourist visa or eVOA and skipping the card. The fix: the visa is permission, the card is the entry form - both are needed, see Who Needs It.
7. Ignoring the update function
The mistake: plans change, and the traveller either leaves the old card standing or files a duplicate from scratch. The fix: use Update Arrival Card on the official portal - search by card number, date of birth and nationality, and correct travel or accommodation details any time before arrival. Only name, nationality and date of birth are locked; those require a fresh card.
